Huatulco, La Crucecita, La Oaxa

General

My goal today was to take in some real Mexican culture.  La Oaxa Restaurant is just around the corner from Xpol, on the outer edge of the market.  I decided to try this authentic Mexican Restaurant named La Oaxa.  This was the first place in Huatulco that I ever saw a No Smoking sign.  I loved the brightly colored decor.  Grasshopper was on the menu.  I wonder how they would have served it at this restaurant.  I wasn’t curious enough to try Grasshopper again.  I ordered the Talapia.  My meal wasn’t fancy at all, but it was delicious.  The fish was so fresh and tender.  Even the rice and veges were tasty.  The place was not very busy. But it wasn’t the ordinary lunch or dinner times.  I will go back and order the Talapia again, it was that good.

Huatulco, San Augustine Beach Cruise

General

We boarded a Cruise Boat in the Santa Cruz Harbor to cruise to San Augustine Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Huatulco.  This cruise was organized by Lenore in Huatulco for The Food Bank.  I took some pictures when we were leaving Santa Cruz harbor.  There are many colorful smaller boats  in the harbor.  The military base could be seen from our tour boat.  Sometimes we hear them practice firing or an army helicopter circling around the tree areas.  You can also reach San Augustine by land , but I have heard the road can be very rough at times.  We cruised close enough to the shoreline to see the beautiful rock formations and other beaches.

Huatulco, Neon Party Bus

General

We caught the Neon Party Bus one evening at the taxi area near Santa Cruz park.  The cost was 100 pesos per person.  I do have a confession to make.  I was the only one waving and yelling “Yea party bus” and ” I love Mexico”.  We were the only white people on the bus and the rest were mostly Mexican.  Some of the buses have excited riders waving and cheering, and some of the buses look pretty quiet.  I have heard that you need to get a ticket somewhere in La Crucecita, but no one that we talked to seemed to know where.  I  found out from the Mezcal Chahue website that you can purchase tickets in La Cucecita park.  Various poeple sell them.  Ask for Malibu or Piratas Bus.  It was a perfect evening to go for a tour on this open double decker bus...

Casa Blanca Del Sol is a Spanish style Villa that oozes charm.  Although I have not stayed there yet, my friends go back every year.  This place is a ten minute walk to beautiful Santa Cruz Beach and a five minute walk to the popular Guns and Beers.  If you want more information about Guns and Beers and Guns and Beach, you can find it on this website.  A short walk also takes you two popular restaurants, Mercarders that offers Thai cuisine as well as other selections and Itoo offers breakfast.

Santa Cruz, Hotel Huatulco Maxico

Accomodations, General

Hotel Huatulco Maxico has a Mexican flavor with a touch of modern newly renovated rooms.  I was in a more traditional room the first month, but upgraded to a modern room the second month. Fridges and safes are supplied.  The people that work at this hotel are wonderful, including the cleaners.  You can expect great service if something is not quite right for you or you need something.  Juliete is the friendly manager.  Joe and Fabiola work the front desk during the day.  There is always a smile and greeting waiting for you!  The pool is nice and usually crystal clear.  There were a few days the pool was murky after a big group had been swimming all day.  The hotel is always on top of it...

Guns and Beers is a two minute walk from Hotel Huatulco Maxican, where I stayed.  Guns and Beers has so much to offer. It has become a regular hang out day or night for many travelers and local expats. Trauble Makers and Pandilleros are excellent local Rock Bands. The place fills right up and there is a lot of shaking going on.  Tables are set up on the sidewalk to accommodate the crowd.

Huatulco, Mexico, Badger and La Bocana Beaches

Destinations, General

Badger Beach is off of the average tourist radar. This beach is like being in the Caribbean with the white sand and crystal clear ocean water. We walked down and back up the steep dirt path to get to this beauty.
There were only a few Mexicans there. It was Sunday and that is one of the days when many Mexicans enjoy their natural surroundings. There are no vendors or washrooms. You are on your own, but so worth going to. The swimming and tranquility there is ideal.

We visited the Bedford Basin Lion’s park in perfect time because the tide was low.  The kids caught small Crabs, Starfish and  Mussels and threw them back into the ocean.  Iris opened one of the mussels to find an orange slimy creature inside.   We felt the difference between the baby starfish and the larger one.  The baby starfish was soft and the older one felt more like the ones you can buy at a store.  Iris and Gus spent hours climbing over the various rocks to find the ocean treasures.

We learned what barnacles were.  They are shells that grow on rocks.  I can honestly say I did not like the looks of them.  It was just weird how they grow on rocks and hard surfaces.

Destinations, Dining, Transportation

This was an enjoyable excursion visiting various Greek Islands.  I paid 35 Euro for a boat trip to Thirasi to see the volcano and swim in the hot springs and later see Oia.

The bus ride to the port was also beautiful!  The circle in the sea was to alert water crafts that there are ruins of a sunken ship.  They decided it was too costly to remove the ruins.  The area is now attracted by divers.

Okanagan Lake, Kelowna, BC September 2017, I spent an enjoyable day with friends on their pontoon boat, cruising the beautiful Okanagan Lake which is 84 miles long.   We started out with a fantastic lunch at The Cactus Club on the shoreline of the Okanagan Lake. The service and food are always excellent there.  I have had the fish tacos several times because they are one of the most tasty I have ever had.

This time a couple of us enjoyed the Salt&Pepper Wings and the fish looked delicious.  We all enjoyed our choices off the menu.

Just a short walk through the Marina and we arrived at Gary and Cheryle’s pontoon boat. Len and Donna and I were fortunate to have been invited for this wonderful day on the lake.  One side of the lake is quite barren...

This quaint winery is not far from Summerland.  This vineyard follows six different lunar rhythms and the vineyards are treated to listening to classical music during their growing season.  They still use old fashioned methods while harvesting the grapes and are Eco Friendly.  We were there on two different occasions.  The first time we ordered the sausage and cheese platter with very hard crackers.  I suggest you bring your own snacks which is 100% acceptable.

Freedom Beach is recommended as a beautiful beach to escape to.  It was a bit off the beaten path.  Our taxi driver even had trouble finding it.  We had to pay 200 baht to go to the beach. The monkey there was very wild and they had it chained up.  That is not common, so I am thinking this must have been a really bad monkey.

My flight with WestJet from Kelowna, BC to Vancouver went well.  Vancouver has been voted as the best airport in Canada and North America.  Four hours later I was on my way to Guangzhou, China with China Southern Airlines.  The flight and comfort was as good as it could get for a 14 hour flight.  The airline attendants were very accommodating and it always helps to have your personal TV to watch movies.  I have flown to Guangzhou airport before and was pleased to be in the newly built airport.  The 5 hour layover gave me lots of time to explore.  I chuckled when I saw a modern Squatter in the bathroom. This one was very nice considering some of the ones I had to use in the past years of travel.

The Celebrity Constellation Cruise Ship took us from Singapore to Brunei, Ho Chi Minh, South Vietnam, Bangkok and Ko Samui, Thailand and back to Sigapore.  Our cruise ship had  three pools and four jet tubs.  One of the pools and jet tubs were indoors, to get away from the hot sun or rainy weather.  I enjoyed swimming while the ship was sailing because it was more challenging to swim in the current of the salt water pool.  Our life guard consisted of a huge green ape, holding a big fish, which towered over us.

There was always music playing while swimming or hanging around on the deck.  If there wasn’t a live band, recorded music would be playing.  The live entertainment was always good and some of us would get up and dance.

After two days at sea our first stop on our Celebration Cruise was Brunei, a very small island bordering Malaysia and the South China Sea.  This was the first time this cruise line embarked there.  Not knowing that you could walk a short ways to catch a bus for two Singapore dollars, we paid the cruise line $54 to take us to the main city. Other cruise members booked their tours through Celebration.  Brunei currency has various colors similar to the Canadian currency.  Singapore and Brunei share the same currency.  At the end of my cruise when I went back to Singapore, the taxi driver was pleased to see a Brunei dollar.  The vendors in Brunei are not pushy as in some other countries.

After the 14 day Celebrity Cruise I stayed one more night in Singapore at the Mercure Singapore Bugis.  When I booked through Expedia I did not realize there were two Mercure Hotels in Singapore until I arrived at the other Mercure Roxy where we had stayed before the cruise.  Mercure Bugis is further away from the airport, but I had prepaid $190 for my room.  It is a very modern flair.  My room was very small, containing two twin beds.  If there would have been two of us we would have had to put our luggage out in the hallway.  Yes, it was that small and did not even have a real closet.  But it was pretty and the view and infinity pool was fabulous!  The little Asian boy was so interested in me, that it made me laugh. a very modern flair...

Sentosa Island is an extension of beautiful Singapore. My favorite tour was the sky tram over to Sentosa Island.  However I would have loved to explore even more but ou time ran out.  We also experienced quite a few rain showers during our time there.  The giant Merlion stands tall as it protects the island of Sentosa.  I found the Merlion a little intimidating at first.  We explored this special island on our own while we waited for the light show to start.  There were many unique vendor shops, etc to explore.  The view of the sunset from the white sand beach was intriguing.

The flight to Singapore was interesting.  There were clear skies, so I could see all of the islands and I was excited to be flying over Malaysia.  We were fingerprinted in the airport upon arrival.  I am thinking that is a great idea for our safety.
We really enjoyed our five days in Singapore, but we could have easily stayed for at least ten days.  There are so many awesome things to do and see there.  It is also a great place to take kids.  They do get a lot of rain creating a beautiful jungle like setting.  Just remember your umbrella!

The government raised the price of vehicles to double of what we would pay in Canada, so that roads are not overly congested.  Chewing gum is illegal and there are very high fines or jail for littering. This keeps the city very clean...
